The intertwining of diverse musical approaches and tools, histories of sounds and unbridled musical imagination and craftsmanship is the expansive guiding principle of the Širom trio. More than a dozen instruments can be found in the repertoire of Iztok Koren, Samo Kutin and Ana Kravanja and at least as many given musical forms that can be perceived as an inspiration behind the character of this ensemble. However, in their practice as well as experiencing they remain anchored in their creative process to an extent that allows them to avoid merely reflecting existing patterns. What this generates in an original, stylistically homogeneous form of expression that oscillates between a wide array of folk sounds and contemporary acoustic rock-style meditations. The end result is grounded yet still mystical minimalism. Širom’s music is contemplative, but can get harder when necessary, it is closer to being band- than chamber-like, to being street as opposed to urban in nature.

Ana Kravanja & Samo Kutin

have for many years now been a mainstay of the creative music scene in Slovenia, a scene brimming with new creative expressions in the fields of imaginary folk, alternative rock, experimental music and free improvisation. More recently the pair have perhaps been particularly known as two thirds of the celebrated (including internationally) band Širom, known for its dream-like music that eludes genre labels. This time Ana and Samo are employing their creativity in a tandem that foregrounds the hurdy gurdy, the plucked string instruments tampura brač and çifteli with acoustic resonators (Samo), and the viola, violin as well as voice (Ana). Delivering a skilled execution and wonderful interplay, the pair interweaves and untangles enticing strands of music, full of hypnotic rumbling, playful jingling, and imaginative sonic and structural solutions. Tracks filled with billowing and reverberations are unveiled before us as complex and multilayered, yet their limber quality enchants and enraptures us instantaneously. Ana and Samo are constructing their soundscapes with musical rigour and exceptional congruence. They place each note exactly where it belongs in what resembles the structure of ancient fairy tales where each element has a role and a meaning and which fit Ana’s and Samo’s music like a glove.

Iztok Koren

… otherwise known as a member of the imaginative folk trio Širom and the post-rock quartet ŠKM Banda, is now back with his own solo project. He is inspired by contemplations on the possibilities of overcoming one’s own selfishness, stubbornness of emotions like anger, guilt and envy, Yi Jing and the endless dance between hope and the repetition of history. Iztok weaves his music like a spiderweb on a classical and modified banjo, with the occasional help of field recordings.

Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick.

Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick are a collaborative artist team who have been working together since they met while attending art school at Washington University in St. Louis in the early 1980s. Both were born in 1964, in New York City and London respectively. They work primarily in the fields of photography and installation art, specializing in fictitious histories set in the past or future.   These may include: documentary-style panoramic and square photographs that combine absurdist fantasy and bogus anthropology; elaborately crafted artifact, costumes and sculpture, often constructed of unlikely materials such as bread or fur, painting and drawings ranging from large scale works on plaster to pages of conceptual doodling. Kahn lives in Ghent NY, and Selesnick in Rhinebeck NY.

Their current work features the recreation of the Truppe Fledermaus’s Memory Theatre of 1932 with its full complement of Batfolk, Greenmen, Rope-Slingers, and Death-Dancers in all their Carnivalesque glory.  Kahn & Selesnick have participated in over 100 solo and group exhibitions worldwide and have work in over 20 collections, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Houston Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution. In addition, they have published 3 books with Aperture Press, Scotlandfuturebog, City of Salt, and Apollo Prophecies. Their most recent book, 100 Views of the Drowning World, is available now from Candela Books.
